KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire will look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on its history of the program.

The University of Tennessee football program is 7-1 all-time in contests played on Sept. 5.

The Vols first played a game on Sept. 5 during the 1981 season. That was a tilt against Southeastern Conference foe Georgia in Athens. The Bulldogs won that game, 44-0.

The Volunteers, however, have gone on to win seven consecutive games on that date. Tennessee’s current streak began on Sept. 5. 1987 when it routed Colorado State, 49-3, at Neyland Stadium.

Wins followed in 1991 over Louisville, 28-11, 1992 over Southwestern Louisiana, 38-3, 1998 over Syracuse, 34-33, over UNLV in 2004, 42-17,  in 2009 over Western Kentucky, 63-, and in 2015 over Bowling Green, 59-30.

Tennessee is set to host Charlotte at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 5, 2020.

It will be the second all-time meeting between the Big Orange and the 49ers. Tennessee outlasted Charlotte, 14-3, on Nov. 3, 2018.
