KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

The University of Tennessee football program holds a 2-3 all-time record in contests played on Sept. 3.
The Vols first played on Sept. 3 during the 1983 season, losing to Pittsburgh, 13-3, in Knoxville at Neyland Stadium.
Tennessee would also lose season-opening games to No. 12 Georgia, 28-17, during the 1988 season and at No. 14 UCLA, 25-23, in 1994. The game against UCLA was played at the Rose Bowl.
The Vols defeated UAB, 17-10, in 2005 and Montana, 42-16, in 2011. Both games took place in Knoxville at Neyland Stadium.
