How the Vols have fared in games played on Sept. 30

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

September 30

The Volunteers have played 15 games on Sept. 30. They hold a 9-6 record in contests that have taken place on that date.

The Vols first played on Sept. 30 in 1905. They notched a 16-6 victory over Tennessee School for the Deaf, a Knoxville high school for the hearing impaired.

In 1916, the Volunteers earned a shutout victory over Tusculum, downing the Pioneers 33-0.

In 1922, Tennessee beat Carson-Newman 32-7.

Tennessee tangled with Virginia Tech and came away with a 27-0 victory in 1933.

In 1944, the Vols beat Kentucky 26-13. The Vols lost to Mississippi State, 7-0, in 1950.

Tennessee and Auburn have collided on the gridiron  five times on Sept. 30. The Tigers hold a 3-2 advantage over the Big Orange in games between the longtime rivals played on that date.

Auburn prevailed, 24-21, in 1961. UT won, 27-13, in 1967. In 1972, the Tigers edged the Vols, 10-6, in Birmingham. In 1978, Auburn prevailed, 29-10, in Birmingham. Tennessee won in Knoxville, 27-14, in 1989.

In 1995, the Big Orange beat Oklahoma State 31-0 at Neyland Stadium. In 2006, the Vols routed Memphis 41-7 in West Tennessee.

The Vols last played on Sept. 30 in 2017 when they lost to Georgia, 41-0.
