The Volunteers have been successful in tilts contested on this date, playing 12 times and posting a record of 9-3.
UT first played on Sept. 28 in 1929 when it defeated Centre College, 40-6, in Knoxville.
The Vols shut out Southwestern, 20-0, in 1935, and in 1940, Tennessee notched a shutout victory over Mercer, 49-0.
The Big Orange edged Georgia Tech, 13-9, in 1946.
In 1957, Auburn edged the Vols 7-0. The Tigers also outlasted the Vols, 23-19, in 1963. In 1968, the Volunteers toppled Memphis State 24-17.
Auburn routed Tennessee, 21-0, in 1974. In 1985, Auburn entered a showdown with the Vols as the country’s top-ranked team and Tennessee upset the Tigers, 38-20, at Neyland Stadium. In 1991, UT downed the Tigers 30-21.
The Vols, in 2002, came from behind to defeat Rutgers 35-14.
The Vols last played on Sept. 28 in 2013 when they outlasted South Alabama, 31-24.
