Recapping how the Vols have fared in games played on Sept. 27

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

September 27

The Volunteers have played on Sept. 27 on 12 occasions, going 8-4 in games contested on that date.

Tennessee first played on Sept. 27 in 1913 when it shut out Carson-Newman, 58-0.

In 1919, the Vols routed Tusculum 29-6. UT played Maryville on Sept. 27, 1930 and posted a 54-0 victory over the Scots.

Tennessee tangled with Georgia Tech in 1947 and the Yellow Jackets stung the Big Orange, 21-0.

In 1952, the Vols collided with Mississippi State in Memphis and UT outlasted the Bulldogs, 14-7. In 1958, Tennessee suffered a 13-0 loss to Auburn in Birmingham. The Vols toppled Auburn, 49-19, in 1969.

The Tigers and the Tennessee renewed acquaintances on the gridiron again in 1975 with the Big Orange edging Auburn, 21-17.

In 1980, the two teams met in Auburn with the Vols shutting out the Tigers, 42-0. Auburn returned the favor in 1986, nabbing a 34-8 win.

Tennessee played against South Carolina in 2003 and the Vols outlasted the Gamecocks, 23-20, in overtime.

Auburn edged the Big Orange, 14-12, in 2008.

Tennessee last played on Sept. 27 in 2014 and lost to Georgia, 35-32, in Athens.
