Recapping how the Vols have fared in games on Sept. 26

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program’s history.

The Volunteers have enjoyed success on this date and Tennessee will try to improve on that when they travel to South Carolina today.

Tennessee enters the game with an all-time record on this date of 9-4-2.

This season marks the second time that Tennessee and South Carolina have met on Sept. 26. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in 1942 in Columbia when the Gamecocks were in the Southern Conference. UT left the SoCon for the SEC following the 1932 season.

The Vols first played on Sept. 26 in 1914 when they beat Carson-Newman, 88-0.

In 1931, the Vols shut out Maryville College 33-0.

The Big Orange picked up a 13-0 victory over Chattanooga in 1936 before tying South Carolina in 1942.

Tennessee played Mississippi State and lost, 26-0, in 1953.

The Vols have played Auburn five times on Sept. 26, going 2-2-1 on that date against the Tigers.

Tennessee won 3-0 in 1959. Auburn prevailed, 36-23, in 1970, and the Vols escaped with a 10-7 victory at Neyland Stadium in 1981.

In 1987, the Vols and Tigers played to a 20-20 tie.

Tennessee played Cincinnati on Sept. 26, 1992, and shut out the Bearcats 40-0.

On Sept. 26, 1998, the Big Orange beat Houston, 42-7, on its way to a national championship.

In 2005, the Vols edged LSU 30-27 in overtime, and in 2009, the Vols got a homecoming win over Ohio, 34-23.

The Vols last played on this date in 2015 and lost at Florida, 28-27.
