Recapping how the Vols have fared in contests on Sept. 23

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

September 23

The Volunteers have played on Sept. 23 eight times. The Big Orange holds a record of 7-0-1 on that date. All of Tennessee’s games on that date have been played in Knoxville.

The Vols first played on Sept. 23 in 1922 and they shut out Emory & Henry, 50-0.

In 1950, the Vols routed Southern Mississippi 56-0. The Vols beat Wake Forest, 45-6, in 1972.

In 1978, Oregon State came to Knoxville and the Vols and Beavers played to a 13-13 tie, the only blemish on UT’s all-time record on Sept. 23.

In 1995, the Volunteers picked up a 57-14 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi State at Neyland Stadium.

In 2000, the Vols toppled Louisiana-Monroe 70-3 on Rocky Top, and in 2006 Tennessee downed Marshall 33-7.

The Vols last played on Sept. 23 in 2017 and they edged Massachusetts, 17-13.
