KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program’s history.

The Volunteers have played six games on Sept. 22. UT has a record of 4-1-1 on this date.

UT first played on Sept. 22 in 1973. The Big Orange toppled Army, 37-18, on the road.

In 1979, the Vols routed Utah, 51-18, at Neyland Stadium. In 1984, Tennessee and Army played in Knoxville and the game ended in a 24-24 tie.

The Vols defeated Arkansas State, 48-27, in 2007, and topped Akron, 47-26, at home in 2012.

The Vols last played on Sept. 22 in 2018, losing to Florida, 47-21.
