KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.
Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program’s history.

The Volunteers have played seven games on Sept. 21 and UT has a 3-4 record on that date.
Tennessee played a game of Sept. 21 in 2019 and things were ugly for the Vols as they were routed by the Florida Gators, 34-3, in Gainesville.
That loss extended UT’s losing streak to four in games contested on Sept. 21.
The Big Orange first played on Sept. 21 in 1963. Tennessee beat the Richmond Spiders in Knoxville, 34-6.
In 1974, Tennessee toppled Kansas 17-3 at home. In 1991, the Vols outlasted Mississippi State, 23-21.
All four of Tennessee’s losses on Sept. 21 have come at the hands of the Gators.
In addition to falling to Florida last year, Tennessee lost to the Gators, 39-25, in 1996.
The Gators toppled UT, 30-13, in 2002. Florida defeated Tennessee, 31-17, in 2013.
