Detailing how the Vols dared in games played on Sept. 17

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the program’s history.

The Vols have a losing record in games contested on Sept. 17. The Big Orange has a 2-4 record on this date.

Tennessee first played on Sept. 17 in 1977. They hosted Boston College at Neyland Stadium and out lasted the Eagles, 24-18.

The Vols followed that victory up with four consecutive losses on Sept. 17.

All of those defeats came in Southeastern Conference games.

In 1988, the Vols were routed by LSU, 34-9, in Knoxville.

The Vols have played SEC East rival Florida three times on Sept. 17 and all three of those games were losses to the Gators.

Florida beat UT, 31-0, in 1994 at Neyland Stadium.

In 2005, the Gators prevailed over Tennessee, 16-7, in Gainesville.

The two divisional rivals met in Gainesville again in 2011 with the Gators winning, 33-23.

In 2016, the Vols played their last game on Sept. 17 and they edged Ohio, 28-19.
