Vols’ all-time record on Sept. 16

How Tennessee has fare in games on Sept. 16

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the program’s history.

September 13

The Volunteers have not experienced much success on this date. Tennessee has a 2-6 record on Sept. 16. Four of those losses have come to Southeastern Conference East Division foe Florida.

UT has lost to the Gators on Sept. 16 in 1995, 2000, 2006 and 2017.

The Vols first played on Sept. 16 in 1967. They tangled with No. 8 UCLA at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and came up on the short end of a 2016 decision against the Bruins.

In 1972, the Vols edged Penn State, 28-21, at Neyland Stadium.

In 1978, UCLA came to Knoxville and beat the Big Orange. The Bruins blanked the Vols, 13-0.

In 1989, Tennessee routed Duke, 28-6, at home. The Blue Devils were coached by Steve Spurrier that season.

Spurrier, however, would avenge that loss and get the better of the Vols as head coach of the Gators. On Sept. 16, 1995, Spurrier guided Florida to a 62-37 victory over UT in Gainesville.

In 2000, the Gators, under Spurrier, came back to beat the Vols, 27-23. The Gators also beat the Vols, 21-20, in 2006 with Urban Meyer as head coach.

In 2017, the Gators, coached by Jim McElwain, defeated the Vols, 26-20.
