KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.
Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in the history of the program.
September 11
The Vols have split four games played on Sept. 11, going 2-2.
The Big Orange first played on Sept. 11 in 1976. On that day, the Volunteers hosted Duke at Neyland Stadium and the Blue Devils left East Tennessee with a 21-18 victory in what would be Bill Battle’s final season as UT’s head coach.
The Vols would finish the year with a 6-5 record and not be invited to a bowl game.
In 1982, Tennessee, under the direction of head coach Johnny Majors, would edge Iowa State, 23-21, at Neyland Stadium.
Majors’ first head coaching job was with the Cyclones.
In 1995, Tennessee would play Georgia in a Southeastern Conference tilt in Knoxville. The Big Orange would hammer the Bulldogs, 38-6, in the only SEC game that the Vols have played in on Sept. 11.
In 2001, however, the Volunteers were scheduled to play Florida in Gainesville, but that game was postponed due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.
The contest would be played on Dec. 1 and the Big Orange edged the Gators, 34-32, to win the SEC East.
The last time UT played on Sept. 11 was in 2010 and the Vols were routed by Oregon, 48-13, at home.
