How Tennessee has fared in football games contested on Oct. 6

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

October 6

The Volunteers have played 11 times on Oct. 6 and have posted a record of 7-3-1 in games contested on that date.

UT first played on Oct. 6 in 1906. The Vols shut out American University, 10-0.

In 1923, the Vols and Maryville College played to a 14-14 tie.

In 1928, the Big Orange routed Centre College 41-7. Tennessee upended William & Mary, 48-17, in 1945.

Tennessee defeated Duke, 26-0, in 1951. The Vols also toppled the Blue Devils 33-20 in 1956.

In 1962, the Vols dropped a 7-6 decision to Mississippi State in Memphis.

Kansas and UT tangled in Memphis in 1973 with the Big Orange escaping West Tennessee with a narrow, 28-27, victory over the Jayhawks.

In 1979, Mississippi State routed the Vols 28-9.

2001 saw Georgia outlast UT, 26-24, at Neyland Stadium.

The Vols beat Georgia in 2007, in the last game they played on Oct. 6, 35-14.
