Recapping how UT has fared in football games on Oct. 5

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

October 5

The Volunteers have been successful on games contested on Oct. 5, compiling a record of 11-3.

UT first played on Oct. 5 in 1907. On that day, the Vols shut out Tennessee Military Institute, a military high school in Sweetwater, 30-0.

Tennessee notched a 101-0 victory over King in 1912.

The Vols shut out Chattanooga, 20-0, in 1929. In 1934, Tennessee toppled North Carolina 19-7. The following year, North Carolina routed UT 38-13.

In 1940, Tennessee shut out Duke 13-0. The Blue Devils and Vols met again in 1946 with the Big Orange capturing a, 12-7, victory.

The Vols beat Mississippi State, 14-9, in 1957. Mississippi State downed Tennessee, 7-0, in 1963.

In 1968, the Vols routed Rice 52-0.

1974 saw the Big Orange edge Tulsa, 17-10. The Vols got by Wake Forest, 31-29, in 1985.

The Vols prevailed in a six-overtime thriller against Arkansas, 41-38, at Neyland Stadium during the 2002 season.

The Vols last played on Oct. 5 in 2013 when they lost an overtime tilt to Georgia, 34-31.
