KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is taking a look at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its history.

The Volunteers have played 13 times on Oct. 4 and have gone 8-5 in games contested on that date.

UT first played on Oct. 4 in 1913 when it defeated Athens, 95-0.

In 1924, the Vols shut out Emory & Henry 27-0. Tennessee posted an 18-0 victory over Centre in 1930.

The Vols have played Duke three times on Oct. 5 and the the Blue Devils have prevailed in all three of those tilts. In 1941, Duke beat Tennessee 19-0. The Blue Devils posted a 19-7 victory in 1947 and Duke toppled the Vols, 7-0, in 1952.

In 1958, Mississippi State and Tennessee collided in Memphis with the Vols edging the Bulldogs 13-8.

In 1969, Tennessee routed Memphis State 55-16.

Tennessee defeated Texas-El Paso, 26-16, in 1986. In 1997, the Vols downed Mississippi State 31-17.

In 2008, the Big Orange edged Northern Illinois 12-9.

The Volunteers last played on Oct. 4 in 2014 and lost to Florida, 10-9.
