When the Volunteers take the field today against Missouri in their 2020 home opener at Neyland Stadium, they will try to continue a winning tradition in games contested on Oct. 3.
The Big Orange have played 18 times on this date and have compiled a record of 14-4.
Tennessee first played on Oct. 4 in 1903 when it defeated Maryville College, 17-0.
In 1908, Tennessee shut out North Carolina 12-0.
The Vols routed King College, 55-3, in 1914.
In 1919, UT toppled Maryville 32-2. The Vols notched a shutout victory over Emory & Henry, 51-0, in 1925.
The Big Orange blanked Clemson, 44-0, in 1931.
Tennessee first lost a game on October 3 in 1936 when it fell to North Carolina, 14-6.
In 1942, the Vols beat Fordham 40-14. Duke knocked off Tennessee, 21-7, in 1953.
In 1953, the Vols defeated Mississippi State 22-6. UT edged the Bulldogs, 14-13, in Memphis in 1964.
In 1970, the Big Orange downed Army 48-3. 1987 saw UT topple California, 38-12. The Vols shut out LSU, 20-0, in 1992.
In 1996, The Vols tangled with Ole Miss in Memphis and UT clobbered the Rebels, 41-3.
In 1998, Tennessee outlasted Auburn, 17-9, on its way to winning the national championship.
In 2009, UT lost to the Tigers 26-22.
The Vols last played on Oct. 3 in 2015 when they lost to Arkansas, 24-20.
