Recapping how the Vols have fared in games played on Oct. 24

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891.

Vols Wire is looking at each calendar date that Tennessee has played on in its program history.

When Tennessee hosts Alabama today at Neyland Stadium, it will mark the 19th time that the Volunteers have played on Oct. 24. UT has compiled a 12-4-2 record in its 18 previous games on that date.

The Vols first played on Oct. 24 in 1892 when they lost to University of the South, 54-0.

In 1896, the Volunteers edged the Chattanooga Athletic Club 4-0. UT notched a 10-0 victory over Georgia in 1908.

In 1914, the Vols downed Alabama 17-7.

The Volunteers played in consecutive years on Oct. 24 in 1924 and 1925. In 1924 Tennessee dropped a 7-2 decision to Mississippi A&M in Memphis. In 1925, the Vols and LSU played to a scoreless tie.

1931 saw the Vols blank North Carolina, 7-0. In 1936, UT edged Duke 15-13.

The Vols routed Furman, 52-7, in 1942. In 1953, Tennessee routed Louisville 59-6.

In 1959, Tennessee downed Chattanooga 23-0. LSU and the Vols played to a 3-3 tie in 1964.

Tennessee defeated Florida, 38-7, in 1970.  The Vols outlasted Georgia Tech, 29-15, in 1987.

In 1998, the Big Orange beat Alabama 35-18. The Crimson Tide edged the Vols, 12-10, in 2009.
