When Jedd Fisch hired Steve Belichick as the Washington Huskies’ defensive coordinator in February, many expected that his father, eight-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick would play some kind of role with the Huskies.
During spring practice, the former New England Patriots head coach showed up and spent five days in Seattle where he spoke at Washington’s annual coaching clinic, oversaw a few practices, and worked with Fisch’s coaching staff on teaching strategies and more. Now in the fall, the future Hall of Famer has returned in a role that shouldn’t be surprising for someone of his stature.
“Whenever we have Coach Belichick out here it’s a blessing,” safeties coach Vinnie Sunseri said on Friday. “He sees the game from a bird’s eye view and it helps us as coaches to have him out there. He’s just around doing his thing, I don’t really pay attention to where he’s at in the building, I just enjoy having him out here.”
Through two practices in Seattle, Belichick has been much more involved this fall. He’s been spotted helping linebackers and safeties working on run fits and was even captured giving true freshman quarterback Demond Williams Jr. some pointers during a drill.
As long as Belichick is around, it appears that he has a free pass to step in and offer his wisdom wherever he deems it necessary, which is a very special opportunity for everyone involved with the Huskies.
