With Spencer Dinwiddie set to undergo surgery on his partially torn ACL, one of the first questions the Nets need to find an answer to is, “Who will start in Dinwiddie’s place?” Of course, Brooklyn’s third-best player — with or without Dinwiddie available — is Caris LeVert. He was expected to start this year while Dinwiddie would revert back to sixth man. But Steve Nash decided to take the inverse approach to begin the year.
LeVert absolutely had to start Monday with Dinwiddie, Kevin Durant (injury recovery) and Kyrie Irving (rest) all out, so no clarity on that front was provided from the Nets’ loss to Memphis. If former New Jersey Nets superstar Vince Carter had any say on the matter, he’d have Brooklyn’s head coach sticks to his original plan for LeVert.
“I hope — I know Steve, former teammate of mine, good friend. I hope he leaves LeVert on the bench and feature him that way,” Carter said on ESPN’s The Jump on Tuesday. “I think he’s gonna become their third scorer, so let him have his time with this style and the way you’re playing. Let him have the second unit as the feature guy.
“And, of course, sometimes you can play the three of them together. But I think, keep it this way, go get somebody who can get you a bucket or a ball-handler — like a Jamal Crawford or someone who can score, get buckets and be a ball-handler.”
