Villanova’s Cam Whitmore out until November due to thumb injury

The potential lottery pick will be sidelined until at least November after suffering a thumb injury on his shooting hand.

Villanova freshman forward Cam Whitmore will undergo right thumb surgery next week and will be sidelined until at least next month, the team announced.

Whitmore, the 11th-ranked prospect in the class of 2022, suffered the injury to his shooting hand on Wednesday in practice. He will be reevaluated in early November and could return to action at that time depending on how he responds to treatment.

The 18-year-old most recently competed with USA Basketball in the 2022 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Tijuana, Mexico. He was named MVP of the event after leading the U.S. to the gold medal, averaging 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists.

Whitmore is considered a potential top-10 pick next year in the NBA draft. He is highly touted for his athleticism and ability on offense. He can score from seemingly all over the court and should help the Wildcats make another deep run in the postseason.

Villanova tips off its season on Nov. 7 versus La Salle.
