Every time that rookie Benton Whitley has been on a team’s practice squad this season, he’s ended up signed to another team’s 53-man roster.
After Willie Gay Jr. was suspended, the Chiefs poached the former Holy Cross defensive end from the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad. He was on the 53-man roster in Kansas City for a few weeks, but he never actually appeared in a game.
The team waived him a week ago today in order to make room for DT Taylor Stallworth on the 53-man roster and promptly re-signed him to the practice squad once he cleared waivers. That, of course, meant he’d eventually be poached by another team.
The Minnesota Vikings announced on Wednesday, that they’d signed him to the 53-man roster

Vikings LB DJ Wonnum has been dealing with an undisclosed illness and missed the team’s game against the Dolphins last week. It seems that Whitley will be a depth piece at the edge rusher position for Minnesota. His role will be a bit different there as they run a 3-4 defensive scheme.
Signing him from the Chiefs’ practice squad means that he must remain on the 53-man roster for three weeks. The earliest they could release him is after the conclusion of Week 9.
