Vikings place Najee Thompson on season-ending IR

The Vikings had to place one of their best special teams’ players on the season-ending IR.

Some shockwaves went through Minnesota when it looked like the Vikings were waving safety and special team standout Najee Thompson. Minnesota moved to sign offensive lineman Matthew Cindric and waived Thompson with an injury designation.

However, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, Thompson cleared waivers and is back with Minnesota, but he was placed on the season-ending IR.

Thompson’s sophomore season in the NFL is over before it started. The Vikings signed Thompson last season as a UDFA and made the 53-man roster. He starred as a gunner on special teams. Thompson played in 15 games and recorded seven tackles and recovered a fumble.

Offensive lineman Jeremy Flax also cleared waivers and is back with the Vikings. Like Thompson, he was placed on the season-ending IR, which ended his season.

Minnesota has had several players go down with injuries this preseason. Rookie J.J. McCarthy and cornerback Mekhi Blackmon are the two notable players who will miss the entire 2024 season with season-ending injuries.
