Knockout artist Vergil Ortiz Jr.did his thing on Friday night, stopping Samuel Vargas in the seventh round of a scheduled 12-round welterweight bout behind closed doors at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, Calif.
Ortiz now has 16 knockouts in as many fights.
The product of Dallas joined Errol Spence Jr. and Danny Garcia – 147-pounders Ortiz would like to face – as the only fighters to stop the tough, slick Vargas.
Ortiz came out firing at the opening bell but, by the final round, he was landing power punches at a rate that overwhelmed Vargas (31-6-2, 14 KOs). The underdog tried to hold Ortiz to stop the onslaught but got to a point where he couldn’t defend himself.
That’s when referee Jack Reiss stepped in and ended the fight. There were two seconds remaining in Round 7.
