Alexander Povetkin’s one-punch knockout of Dillian Whyte this past Saturday turned Whyte’s career upside down and altered the immediate future of the heavyweight division.
Fans and others haven’t held back in taking shots at Whyte on social media, focusing on the fact that the Londoner seemed to be more focused on his position as mandatory challenger to Tyson Fury’s title than his fight with Povetkin.
Bob Arum, co-promoter of Fury, was among them. He tweeted: “Dillian Whyte was so busy fighting for his WBC mandatory position that he didn’t see Povetkin’s uppercut, which knocked him cold on his ass.”
Whyte will now have to defeat Povetkin in an expected rematch if he hopes to fight for a major title anytime soon.
And with Whyte out of the way, the winner of Fury-Deontay Wilder III is free to fight the winner of Anthony Joshua-Kubrat Pulev for the undisputed heavyweight championship.
In this episode of The Ak & Barak Show, courtesy of DAZN, hosts Akin Reyes and Barak Bess discuss the fallout from Povetkin’s knockout.
