The San Antonio Spurs have failed to put together a successful season, at least in the sense of wins and losses. The reality is that this season was never going to be about the team’s record. It was never about making the playoffs. That would have been a nice touch, but development was always going to be the Celtics’ top priority this year.
However, on Friday night, the Spurs absolutely demolished the Charlotte Hornets, winning by a score of 135-99. LaMelo Ball returned to action after an extended injury absence just to get pummelled by the worst team in the Western Conference. Wembanyama played well, but he’s still on a minutes restriction.
Throughout the course of the season, there has been some criticism of the Spurs for not getting Wembanyama the ball enough. When asked about it, Wembanyama brushed it aside.
“Of course, I heard of [the criticism], but it’s never been close to reality,” Wembanyama said via ESPN. “It’s nothing to worry about. I’m not a conventional player. I needed time to figure out how I want to play and how I need to play for the team. I guess everyone needed time to figure out how to play with me.”
Against the Hornets on Friday night, Wembanyama ended the game with 26 points, 11 rebounds, one assist, and two blocks while shooting 9-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point arc.
While some may like to see the rookie get more touches, he seems content with the way the Spurs are playing right now, at least in terms of his touches.
