The San Antonio Spurs got blown out by the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. It was a brutal showing but also a solid game for rookie big man Victor Wembanyama. The 20-year-old Frenchman found his footing early and managed to score in bunches, ending with a team-high 27 points.
Unfortunately, his performance didn’t matter as the league-best Celtics absolutely pummeled the worst-in-the-West Spurs. The contest ended in a 117-98 blowout win for Boston, who was up by as many as 30 points during the game. The Celtics’ talent level was simply too much for the Spurs, who are in a full-on rebuild, to handle.
After the game, Wembanyama spoke highly about the talent on the Celtics, noting their sacrifices as well.
“Everybody can hoop on that team,” Wembanyama said via Khari Thompson of Boston.com. “Everyone is a threat on the court, but at the same time they all know their roles and they’re all willing to share the ball from the most important franchise guys to the role players. Everybody is ready to compete and make the sacrifices,” Wembanyama added. “I can see that. I can see that compared to the past few years as well. I remember clearly watching them in the Finals against Golden State a few years ago. I can see the growth in that team.”
Along with his 27 points, Wembanyama ended the game with five rebounds, one assist, and one block. He shot 10-of-19 from the floor and 2-of-6 from behind the three-point line.
Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum had 24 points, Jaylen Brown had 24, and Jrue Holiday had 22.
