The San Antonio Spurs have lost nine of their last 10 games and have won just two games since their November 5 win over the Phoenix Suns. Needless to say, it’s been an ugly season in San Antonio. On Thursday night, the losing persisted, as they fell by a score of 125-121 to the Milwaukee Bucks. But that game was different.
A loss was still the outcome, but the Spurs fought tooth and nail with one of the best teams in the league. Victor Wembanyama blocked Giannis Antetokounmpo at the rim down the stretch, Devin Vassell hit some big-time shots, and the Spurs were in the game until the bitter end.
After the game, Wembanyama spoke about the positives of a game like this one.
“Just the fact that we could compete with a championship-level team like this is promising,” Wembanyama said via Matt Guzman of Inside the Spurs. “It’s the first thing Pop told us coming back to the locker room. We had some moments where everything seemed to work out.”
Wembanyama’s confidence moving forward is through the roof, and so is Vassell’s.
“We’re trying to compete every game,” Vassell said. “If we got three stops, it could have been a totally different game. If we got three buckets, it would have been a totally different game. We’re just learning that. We’re going to be good.”
When the Spurs selected Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, they knew they had a franchise centerpiece on their hand. He and Vassell are ready to push forward into the future together. With confidence.
