Vernon Davis releases his retirement statement

Here’s the statement issued by the Redskins TE.

Washington Redskins tight end Vernon Davis used Super Bowl week to announce his retirement alongside a presence like Rob Gronkowski.

The announcement wasn’t wholly unexpected but the nature of it was. Davis has now made things official by releasing a full-blown statement on his social media.

Davis spent the last four seasons of his illustrious career in Washington. In total, he played 14 seasons with four different teams and hangs up the cleats at the age of 36 as he presumably turns his attention toward acting.

This past season, the veteran only saw the field in four games while dealing with injuries, which complicated things for a Redskins team trying to bring along rookie passer Dwayne Haskins without Jordan Reed available.

For the Redskins, it’s yet another sign that the position needs to be a big priority this offseason given the lack of consistency there.
