UT shot put records fall at FSU Relays

Jordan West and Latavia Maines set UT shot put records in Tallahassee.

A pair of University of Tennessee track and field records were shattered Thursday at the FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Florida.

UT shot putters Latavia Maines and Jordan West both set records.

Maines, the back-to-back Southeastern Conference indoor shot put champion, made her first outdoor appearance of the 2021 season for the Lady Vols. She posted a mark of 17.73 meters (58 feet, 2 inches) to capture the event title at Florida State.

Maines, a redshirt junior, also broke the all-time Lady Vols’ record of 17. 66 meters (57-11.25) held by seven-time All-America standout Annie Alexander. Alexander set that mark in 2011.

Maines’ mark in shot put is the top effort recorded during the 2021 outdoor season and is currently the fourth best mark in the world since the outdoor season began.

West, who was making his first attached outdoor appearance since 2018, posted a mark of 19.82 meters (65-0.5).

He finished second in Tallahassee and broke his own program record, which was set three years ago. He is currently No. 4 in the NCAA and No. 12 in the world.
