Usher already performed on the biggest possible stage for the intersection of sports and entertainment as the headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show this past Sunday. But if LA Knight had his way, he’d also be part of the upcoming Showcase of the Immortals: WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.
Knight, who has seen his tidal wave of popularity over the last 18 months or so driven in part by WWE fans falling in love with his trademark “Yeah!” expression, got the idea during his appearance this week on “The Bump.”
Host Megan Morant said that watching Usher perform his own his song “Yeah” as part of the Super Bowl festivities inevitably made her think of Knight, who then ran with the idea from there (h/t Fightful for the transcription).
Wait a minute. Can we get this set up? Is he coming to WrestleMania for my entrance or what?… I’m coming out and I’m [performing ‘Yeah’] with him. Let’s go.
“Yeah” isn’t Knight’s usual entrance theme, but the guess here is that WWE fans would prefer it if it meant Usher was helping to sing him to the ring. WrestleMania also has a long history of participation by stars from the world of music (going all the way back to Cyndi Lauper and Liberace at WrestleMania I), so there couldn’t be a better place for it.
There’s just one small issue for Knight: He hasn’t secured a spot on the WrestleMania 40 card yet. He’ll have a chance to win one at Elimination Chamber if he can outduel five other competitors for a shot at Seth Rollins and the World Heavyweight Championship, but that’s far from guaranteed.
If he can pull it off, there’s a chance Usher might be free. His Las Vegas residency ended in December, and his upcoming tour doesn’t start until late summer (his own Lovers & Friends festival in Vegas is in early May). Until we see if it can come together, just let this idea “Burn” its way into your brain.
