USC star Amon Ra St. Brown talks football before 2024 Lions season

Amon-Ra St. Brown will outwork anyone in the room.

Detroit Lions star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown continues to make headlines with major offseason moves. The former USC star re-signed with the Lions for a four-year, $120 million extension. He is now starring in the NFL’s new Netflix series “Receiver,” following the highly popular “Quarterback” series last year; the show is expected to be a summer hit. The Pivot Podcast sat down with Amon-Ra St. Brown, a two-time Pro Bowler, to talk about his upbringing in a strict but motivating household, the recent surge from the Detroit Lions, and how he has used motivation to become one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL.

Amon-Ra shared his family history and mindset developed from a young age, always working harder and playing with a chip on his shoulder after dropping in the NFL draft. St. Brown named all 16 wideouts whose names were called before his in the fourth round, using it as fuel to not allow someone else to surpass him when it really counts. Amon prides himself on being more of an “I can show you better than I can tell you” player. He has had a pivotal role on transforming the Lions from a 3-13 team his rookie year to playing in the NFC Championship Game this past season. He credits the leadership of head coach Dan Campbell and a tight-knit locker room for Detroit’s fast turnaround.

St. Brown also reflects on the foundations that shaped him. His unique family dynamic included a bodybuilder father — the former Mr. World, who trained him and his two brothers (one of whom also plays in the NFL) — and a multilingual mother who exposed the family to diverse cultures around the globe while emphasizing education and experience.

Developing a mentality of always outworking the competition, whether by catching 202 passes off the jugs machine daily or lifting weights with his siblings, Amon-Ra spent his life crafting his passion for football. He credits his close-knit family for instilling a work ethic and determination that have defined his NFL rise as a talented, gritty wide receiver, always trying to climb to the very top.
