The USC football team has had some happy moments this season. The Trojans defeated LSU. They shut out Utah State. They rallied in the second half to beat Wisconsin. Overall, however, a 3-2 record is not where this team expected to be. The season has been a considerable disappointment heading into Saturday’s game against Penn State. We can talk in a million different ways about the game keys and what the Trojans have to do, but this ultimately comes down to USC proving it is a good team, something it hasn’t done yet this season. We talked to Nittany Lions Wire about this larger overall point:
It’s not a very good team. USC can’t be playing pillow fights with Minnesota which go down to the final minute and say it is a good team. USC’s loss to Michigan now looks a million times worse after Michigan got handled by a relatively average Washington team. The Trojans are basically playing to the level of their competition, and they haven’t faced a team nearly as good as Penn State. Let’s also keep in mind that the LSU team USC defeated has not been good this year. LSU was lucky to beat South Carolina and struggled for 35 minutes against UCLA at home. There’s a lot of parity in 2024 college football, and USC is part of the parity instead of rising above it to set a noticeably higher standard.
