USC secondary positions draw attention in new football roster release

Tre’Quon Fegans seems to have a specific role on this team. Ceyair Wright? Maybe not. This will generate some discussion.

Cornerback. Safety. These are the main positions in the secondary. Nickel and dime packages create added roles and assignments in the secondary, but corner and safety are the building blocks. If a player isn’t exclusively or clearly one of the two, the “defensive back” label can be applied. That label conveys a measure of ambiguity on a member of a football team’s secondary. Whether that ambiguity is the unwelcome product of a failure to master a specific role, or the happy product of versatility and an ability to play multiple positions, is the big question.

With all of this in mind, USC’s revised roster — updated Friday night — just underwent a few specifications. Two of them occurred in the secondary, where Tre’Quon Fegans was named a cornerback and Ceyair Wright was named a defensive back.

Fegans at corner gives USC’s secondary some clarity. Wright’s designation as a defensive back — not specifically a safety or corner — will create some conversations. Given that reviews of Wright have been positive this offseason, the DB listing might suggest that Wright could play either corner or safety depending on situational need. If so, that’s a plus for USC.

Ultimately, though, preseason camp should shed more light on where players stand within the USC secondary. That camp begins on Friday, July 28.
