USC makes final seven for Top-50 prospect Jontae Gilbert

USC tries to pounce on an Ohio State decommitment.

Out of Douglass High School in Atlanta, Jontae Gilbert committed to Ohio State on July 29, 2022. However, just over a year later, Gilber has now had a change of heart. He decommited from Ryan Day and the Buckeyes.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Gilbert has a list of scholarship offers that includes USC, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Miami, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Pitt, Buffalo, Florida A&M and others.

At 6-foot, 1-inch, and 175 pounds, Gilbert is ranked as the No. 2 safety and 25th overall recruit in the class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Gilbert did provide some quotes to On3 regarding the decommitment.

“First off I want to thank God for all of the blessings he has been sending my way. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through my decision,” Gilbert told On3. “This was a very hard decision to make but after long talks with my family and my coaches, I now want to say I am opening back up my recruiting and decommit from Ohio State. Respect my decision. Thank you Buckeye Nation for everything and to all the Ohio State coaching staff.”

Will this open up the door for Lincoln Riley and USC to step in and snag the 2025 cornerback?
