USC football recruits immediately noticed the firing of Alex Grinch

Recruits were definitely paying attention to the Alex Grinch saga at USC.

The USC Trojans and head coach Lincoln Riley announced that defensive coordinator Alex Grinch has been officially fired.

The program announced the news on Sunday afternoon, just one day after the Trojans fell 52-42 at home to Washington. The loss was USC’s third defeat of the 2023 season and its second in Pac-12 play.

Defensive line coach Shaun Nua and inside linebacker coach Brian Odom will serve as interim co-defensive coordinators for the remainder of the season. Defensive analyst Taylor Mays has also been elevated into an on-field role as a result of this change.

USC recruits and former USC players reacted to the breaking news that came down on Sunday. Keep in mind that one USC recruiting target committed to the Trojans just minutes after Grinch was fired. Everyone was paying close attention to all of this, and USC acted as quickly as it did precisely to minimize recruiting damage done to the program. Many people feel that high-end defensive targets such as Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa went to Notre Dame and not USC because Alex Grinch was on the job in Los Angeles.

USC will now prepare for its next test: a meeting with Oregon in Week 11 on the road with a defense that ranks 11th in the Pac-12 and 109th overall in the FBS.
