Yale transfer forward Matt Knowling, now at USC basketball under Eric Musselman, is expected to undergo surgery next week and set to miss 2-3 months.
“Matt is going to have surgery,” Musselman said after a practice open to the media Wednesday. “He’ll be out anywhere from eight to 12 weeks.”
Knowling played the last three seasons at Yale. The Connecticut native was a first team All-Ivy League selection as a junior. This past year as a senior, he was an All-Ivy League honorable mention pick.
He led the Ivy League and finished 10th nationally in field goal percentage, shooting 62.5 percent.
The 6-foot-7, 200-pound forward averaged 11.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game last season on 56.7 percent shooting.
USC has a roster made up mostly of transfers. It will be fascinating to see how this roster comes together. It’s quite unfortunate that Knowling won’t have a full summer of workouts and practices, which carry the purpose of creating cohesion on a roster. Recent USC players Bronny James in 2023 and Vince Iwuchukwu in 2022 had health problems in the summer which negatively affected their ability to blend into USC rosters in the subsequent season.
