USC basketball loses major opportunities to play Gonzaga, Kansas

The USC Trojans basketball team was scheduled to play non-conference games against Gonzaga and Kansas this fall, which are now cancelled.

The PAC-12 not only ended the hopes of football getting played in 2020, but the basketball programs won’t be playing until 2021 as well – which wipes out a handful of excellent games that were on the docket for the USC Trojans.

Coach Andy Enfield and the Trojans were scheduled to take an inexperienced, but exciting young team and pit them against two titans in the college basketball landscape, the Gonzaga University Bulldogs and the Kansas Jayhawks.

USC was set to take on the Zags in the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, Oregon on November 17. BYU and Oregon were set to complete the four-team tournament, although that game is now out the window as well.

The Trojans locked up a home-and-home with the Jayhawks back in March, and were scheduled to take them on at Allen Fieldhouse on December 19, with Kansas returning to play USC at home on December 21, 2021.

It’s unclear what this ruling means for the college basketball landscape as a whole, but it seems likely the first step will be removing the entire non-conference slate, and pushing back the first few conference games in the hopes of still having a normal (ish) schedule for the 2021 season.
