USC basketball is becoming ‘backcourt university’

USC has become a home for elite backcourts.

The USC Trojans are creating some amazing backcourts. The men have Boogie Ellis, Isaiah Collier, and Kobe Johnson.

The USC women’s basketball team is going to have an amazing backcourt next season. The Trojans landed a major recruiting win last year when JuJu Watkins, the consensus No. 1 player in the Class of 2023, chose to stay home and suit up for the Trojans. That was one huge backcourt pickup.

Now meet Kayleigh Heckel. She is a 5-foot-9 senior point guard who is ranked as the No. 28 player overall in the 2024 recruiting class.

Heckel, a five-star recruit, chose the Trojans over offers from Alabama, Tennessee and Stanford. She hails from Long Island Lutheran High School in New York.

Heckel was named the 2022-23 MaxPreps New York High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year, averaging 16.2 points, 6.5 assists and 3.7 steals per game.

The New York native will join Rian Forestier of Texas, Avery Howell of Idaho, and Laura Williams of Virginia to give head coach Lindsay Gottlieb a bright future in Hollywood and a chance to earn a Final Four appearance and a possible national championship.

USC is backcourt university now. That’s where we are.
