USC 4-star guard Silas Demary decommits, opening the door for Bronny James

When a 4-star recruit decommits from #USC, that will certainly get the attention of @Ducks_Wire @BuckeyesWire and everyone else.

USC fans are focused primarily on the football team’s spring game on Saturday, but just before kickoff, a big recruiting story emerged for the basketball program.

Silas Demary, a four-star recruit for the Trojans, decommitted from the program and reopened his recruitment. Usually, a four-star player decommitting would be bad news, but for the Trojans, it might open the door to Bronny James.

As the Trojans try to fill the remaining spots on their roster for the upcoming season, one obvious complication was — and is — the availability of minutes for the backcourt. With Boogie Ellis returning for this season, Bronny James faced a tougher, more difficult set of considerations. If he wants to play 30 minutes per game, USC still doesn’t make a lot of sense for him as a destination.

However, if Bronny views himself as a two-year player (someone who will spend two years in college, not one), he could accept a comparatively smaller role this season and then become “The Man” in the 2024-2025 season.

Silas Demary was undeniably an obstacle to Bronny getting more minutes down the line, if Bronny ever did have a two-year plan in mind for his collegiate career. Now, Demary’s decommitment frees up a little more space in the backcourt and makes it easier (though still not a piece of cake) for Bronny to fit on the 2023-2024 roster.

Ohio State and Oregon are also involved in Bronny’s recruitment. You can be sure they noted this turn of events.
