After a loss to LSU dropped Florida to 4-3 on the year, all hope at a New Year’s Six Bowl was basically lost. It will take nothing short of a miracle for the Gators to be anything but 4-4 after the game against Georgia, and that’s not going to be enough for coach Dan Mullen to take this team to its fourth-straight NY6 game.
The hope, in that case, is that you could at least land in a bowl with some prestige, such as the Citrus, Outback or Gator Bowls. But instead, USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith has the team heading to Nashville in his latest projection to play in the Music City Bowl against Wisconsin.
While it would be a massively disappointing finish to a season that began with College Football Playoff hopes, that would be an interesting matchup in some ways. It would be a major contrast of styles, with the Badgers being a defensively focused team and the Gators boasting one of the nation’s best offenses, particularly on the ground.
UF has never played in the Music City Bowl, and it has also never faced off against UW despite the number of bowl tie-ins between the SEC and the Big Ten.
Florida will likely be heavily favored in all of its remaining games except against the Bulldogs, and an 8-4 finish is very possible. But that’s not good enough in Gainesville, and Mullen could enter the 2022 season facing considerable pressure.
