USA TODAY ranks UNC football inside top 25

The UNC football program is still in the top 25 in USA TODAY writer Paul Myerberg’s updated re-rank of every team.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program didn’t find themselves ranked in this week’s USA TODAY’s coaches poll nor the Associated Press top 25 despite the 3-0 start and a win at Georgia State.

Instead, UNC received votes in both polls but are slowly creeping up into that top 25. While UNC was left out of the big polls, USA TODAY’s Paul Myerberg released their rankings of every college football team from 1-to-131 so far this season.

And right there in the top 25 are the Tar Heels.

Myerberg has ranked the Tar Heels No. 24 in the updated rankings through the first three weeks of the season. But here’s the kicker. The ranking is actually four sports WORSE than their initial preseason ranking in the poll of No. 20.

UNC is the fourth-best ACC team in the rankings behind NC State, Clemson, and Wake Forest. It’s clear that UNC’s defense is holding them back in these rankings as they really haven’t improved much in the first three games.

The good news is that UNC has several chances upcoming to improve its ranking with games against Notre Dame, Pitt, Wake Forest, Miami and NC State.
