Urban Meyer hit a new, embarrassing low (on the field) in Seattle on Sunday

The Jaguars closed out Sunday’s loss in the most embarrassing way possible.

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Urban Meyer’s first year as a coach in the NFL has been a terrible one, both on, and off the field, as the former star college coach has found out that the jump from campus life to professional life isn’t an easy one. At all.

Yesterday Meyer hit a new low (football-wise) when he took his team way up to Seattle and got blown out by… Geno Smith and the Seahawks, 31-7.

There are many embarrassing things about that loss that should have Meyer’s bosses wondering if this is all worth it.

First, you can’t get blown out by Geno Smith and a Seattle team that was coming off a short week after an ugly loss to the Saints on MNF. Just can’t happen. I mean, come on. Geno Smith!?

Second, the Jags were coming off a bye week following their first win since Week 1 of last season and should have been flying around the field yesterday. Instead, they didn’t score their first points until late in the fourth quarter when they were trailing by 24 points and the victory had been pretty much secured for Seattle.

Oh, and a third thing, and this is a BIG thing – the Jags closed the game out in the absolute worst way possible when they allowed the Seahawks to return an onside kick for a touchdown. Seriously, that happened:

I don’t know how you get more rock bottom as a football team than that. Allowing the other team to take an onside kick to the house?

Yeeeeeeeeeesh.

Meyer said after the game that he “should have kicked it deep” on that sad onside kick. And he’s correct. His team was down by 17 points with under two minutes left. They weren’t going to come back. Kick it deep and move on with your lives.

Instead, they pulled off the worst play of the season and then hopped on a plane for a long – and most likely, quiet – trip back to Jacksonville with a 1-6 record under their belts.

Oh, Meyer also said: “I didn’t see (the ugly loss) coming. … I really felt we had a decent week of practice.”

A decent week of practice! Nothing more inspiring than your coach saying you had a “decent week of practice” before getting blown out by a sub-par team.

Meyer has been a disaster since taking over in Jacksonville and this latest loss, in which his team showed no life after a bye week, is just another example of how bad of a decision it was for the Jags to put the former college coach in charge of their franchise.

What a mess – both on, and off the field.

–  Cooper Rush led the Dallas Cowboys to a win Sunday night and the backup QB’s dad absolutely loved it.

– The Colts’ mascot, meanwhile, had such a sad reaction to the Titans’ game-winning FG in OT.

– Carson Wentz had the worst pick six that you’ll ever see.

– Did you see Justin Fields’ incredible TD run against the 49ers? Man, he made this look way too easy.
