The Indianapolis Colts agreed to terms with veteran cornerback Xavier Rhodes on Thursday, adding some depth and competition to the secondary.
After cutting Pierre Desir, the Colts needed to find some depth on the outside. As it stands entering the month of April, Rhodes likely holds one of the starting spots on the boundary.
Here’s a look at the updated depth chart for the cornerback
CB | Slot | CB |
Xavier Rhodes | Kenny Moore | Rock Ya-Sin |
Quincy Wilson | Marvell Tell | Lafayette Pitts |
With the way the NFL works, nickel packages are becoming more and more popular. Even the Colts, who might be on the lower end of usage, are still in nickel over half of the time on the field. This means the starting cornerback unit right now will be Rhodes and Ya-Sin on the boundary with Moore in the slot.
What will be interesting is when the Colts stay in their base defense with just two cornerbacks on the field. It’s not a package they run a whole lot but they do so enough.
Despite his size, the Colts like to have Moore on the field even in their base defense. He’s an aggressive tackler and his arm length allows him to wrap up ball carriers with ease.
Does this mean the Colts might prefer to have Ya-Sin and Moore on the field in base packages or will they give the veteran more time there? It will be interesting, especially if the Colts wind up investing in a cornerback early in the draft.
Cutting Desir was an interesting move and while brining in Rhodes isn’t a clear upgrade, he’s likely to hold a starting spot on the boundary across from Ya-Sin.
