The UNC football program will be without arguably its best player for a big road game on Saturday at Appalachian State.
Wide receiver [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag] will not play in the Week 1 game against the Mountaineers, dealing with a knee injury. The program did not provide much on Downs’ status leading into the week but the receiver did not participate in pre-game activities and was eventually ruled out.
It’s a big loss for UNC’s offense and a big target for quarterback Drake Maye in the game. Downs is coming off a record-breaking 2021 season and had 9 receptions for 78 yards and 2 touchdowns in the season opener.

He was hurt late in the second half.
With Downs out, UNC is now down their top two wide receivers as Antoine Green will miss the first few weeks as well. The Tar Heels will look to lean on tight ends Bryson Nesbit and Kamari Morales as well as receivers Gavin Blackwell, Kobe Paysour, and J.J. Jones more.
