UNC RB Omarion Hampton picks up national honors for Week 2

UNC football running back Omarion Hampton earned national honors for his play against Appalachian State.

For the second straight week a North Carolina Tar Heels’ football player has earned some national recognition.

Running back Omarion Hampton was named the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week for his performance in the win over Appalachian State.

Hampton rushed for a career-high 234 yards on 26 carries and added three touchdowns. He got the start for North Carolina after British Brooks was sidelined with an injury. And Hampton made the most of his chance, giving the Tar Heels a legit one-two punch in the backfield when Brooks does return.

Hampton was also named the ACC Running Back of the Week for his performance on Saturday.

Each week, the award is handed out to the best running back performance in college football. The Doak Walker Award watchlist will be released mid-season, featuring the top backs in the game.

From there, finalists will be announced and a winner will be selected at the end of the season.
