The UNC football program is hosting Syracuse in Kenan Stadium, and Tar Heel legend [autotag]Sam Howell[/autotag] was in attendance and awarded the Patterson Medal award.
The Patterson Medal is given to legendary UNC athletes who left a Tar Heel stamp during their playing days. Mitch Kupchak, Kenny Smith, Joel Berry II, and Erin Matson are a few to be a recipient of the Patterson Medal, an honor that dates back to 1924.
Howell was honored in the first quarter during a timeout, and the crowd erupted when it was announced that he was at the game.
An All-Time Tar Heel.
Honored to have Sam Howell with us at today’s game as both the Kenan Legend AND a recipient of the Patterson Medal, the top athletic honor given at @UNC.🏅🐏

Howell left big cleats to fill, becoming one of UNC’s greatest quarterbacks of all time. Howell owns the record for the Tar Heels in career passing yards (10,238), single-season passing touchdowns (38), and career passing touchdowns (92).
The former Tar Heel is now seen on Sunday’s commanding Washington to victories.
