North Carolina Tar Heels’ quarterback Drake Maye returned for another season in 2023, fresh off a big 2022 season in which he broke out and led the Tar Heels offense.
Going into 2023, Maye is among the top Heisman trophy contenders and one of the best players overall in college football. But he’s also among the most dominant in the game as well.
College Sports Wire released its list of the most dominant players in college football for the 2023 season and right there in the top 5 is Maye. The quarterback was ranked No. 5 on the list behind USC’s Caleb Williams (No. 1), Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison Jr. (No. 2), Georgia’s Brock Bowers (No. 3), and Florida State’s Jared Verse (No. 4).
Here is what they had to say about Maye going into this season:
“Drake Maye returns as not only one of the best quarterbacks in college football but among the best players overall. After an impressive 2022 campaign, Maye looks to build on that and UNC’s offense will run through him. The arm strength is a big plus and he can beat you with throws all over the field, showcasing his pinpoint accuracy. But an underrated part of his game is his running ability after he finished last season with over 600 rushing yards. His talent is good enough where the season will go as he goes and if the Tar Heels want to have a darkhorse type year, Maye is going to need to be in the Heisman conversation again.”
If Maye can have a repeat of last season, the Tar Heels should be a contender in the ACC. But he may need others, including the defense, to step up around him as well.
Either way, we should expect a big year from the quarterback before he heads off to the NFL draft.
