The UNC football will need to find a new tight ends coach for the upcoming 2023 season and beyond.
Per The Athletic, tight ends coach John Lilly is leaving Chapel Hill and will join the Carolina Panthers with the same position. Lilly will join Frank Reich’s staff there which includes offensive coordinator Thomas Brown who Lilly coached together with before at the University of Georgia.
Lilly took the job at North Carolina in 2020, replacing Tim Brewster who left for Florida.
In three seasons at UNC, Lilly helped improve the position. Last season he coached a good tight end group in Kamari Morales, Bryson Nesbit, and John Copenhaver. The trio combined for 79 receptions for 1,087 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns.
Panthers are hiring UNC tight ends coach John Lilly for the same position on Frank Reich’s staff, per source.
Mentioned this as a possibility earlier this week. Lilly is a longtime TE coach who worked w/ Thomas Brown at Georgia.— Joe Person (@josephperson) February 23, 2023
Lilly was the latest coach to leave the offensive side of the ball for UNC as offensive coordinator Phil Longo and Jack Bicknell left for Wisconsin.
