UNC basketball still ahead of Duke in early 2024-25 rankings

Here is where the UNC basketball program ranks in the CBS Sports’ Top 25 and 1 rankings.

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ basketball roster is pretty much set for the 2024-25 season barring a very surprising late addition. As Hubert Davis and the staff get set for practices in a few months, they have an idea of what to expect come tipoff in November.

And as we are full swing into the Summer, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish has released his updated Top 25 and 1 rankings for the season. As has been the case for most of this offseason, Parrish thinks highly of the Tar Heels and has them ranked No. 4 in his rankings:

This ranking is based on Hubert Davis’ Tar Heels returning five of the top eight scorers – specifically RJ Davis, Elliot Cadeau, Seth Trimble, Jae’Lyn Withers and Jalen Washington – from a team that won the ACC regular-season title and secured a No. 1 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament. UNC is also adding a top-10 recruiting class — one highlighted by five-star prospect Ian Jackson, five-star prospect Drake Powell, Belmont transfer Cade Tyson and Vanderbilt transfer Ven-Allen Lubin — that should give the program a legitimate chance to make a 22nd appearance in the Final Four.

The only teams ahead of North Carolina are No. 1 Kansas, No. 2 Alabama, and No. 3 Houston. Otherwise, UNC is ranked ahead of UConn, Duke, Gonzaga, and Purdue among others.

With a program that is returning some key pieces from a team that won the ACC regular season title a year ago, they will enter the season with high expectations. They also have a good recruiting class coming in plus a few transfer portal pickups.

Let’s see if UNC can make another run at a Final Four and finish the job.
