UNC basketball program showing interest in sophomore recruit

The UNC basketball program is showing interest in 2026 center Sam Funches out of Mississippi.

Hubert Davis and the North Carolina basketball program continues to build their recruiting classes for the future, holding the No. 1 class in 2024 and offers out in 2025.

But now, they are starting to show some interest in a 2026 recruit.

In an interview with Patrick O’Brien of Phenom Hoop Report, class of 2026 center Sam Funches revealed that North Carolina is among the teams that are showing more interest as of late. Here is what he told O’Brien in the interview:

Phenom: Who has been showing interest your way?
Funches: Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Memphis, and UCLA. THey have shown a lot of interest and we are building a relationship. We will see how things go but I’m excited about the opportunity.

While there’s a long way to go in his recruitment, Funches is starting to draw significant interest on the recruiting cycle. He has a total of 18 offers including from Alabama, Florida State, Auburn, Michigan, and NC State among others.

Funches did also say that some of the schools he wanted to visit were Michigan, Duke, Mississippi State, and NC State.

The 6-foot-10, 195-pound center hails out of Madison, Mississippi.
